What it is
E319, or TBHQ (Tertiary-butyl hydroquinone), is a synthetic antioxidant widely used to extend the shelf life of high-fat foods and industrial frying oils. It is incredibly effective at preventing fats from oxidising and turning rancid.

TBHQ is one of the most controversial food additives. While EFSA and the FDA deem it safe at very low concentrations, there is extensive public debate and conflicting animal studies regarding its potential as a neurotoxin, an immune system disruptor, and a carcinogen at high doses.
Immune disruption and toxicity concerns
Animal studies at very high doses show signs of liver enlargement, neurotoxicity, and DNA damage. Some modern studies suggest TBHQ may impair immune responses, though EFSA maintains it is safe at standard dietary limits.
