How it is made

Glycerol forms the "backbone" of all triglyceride molecules (dietary fats). It is commercially produced as a byproduct of soap manufacturing or biodiesel production from plant oils or animal fats.

  1. Saponification or Hydrolysis — Triglycerides (fats and oils) are reacted with water under high pressure, or with an alkali (like lye in soap making).
  2. Separation — The fatty acids separate from the glycerol backbone.
  3. Purification — The crude glycerol is distilled and filtered through activated carbon to produce pure, food-grade glycerin.
