What it is

Health and safety
None at food levels. Magnesium salts draw water into the gut, so unusually large amounts have a mild laxative effect — the same reason magnesium is sold as an antacid and laxative.

Conclusion
There is no reason to avoid magnesium carbonates at the levels found in food. While unusually large doses can have a mild laxative effect, the amounts used to regulate acidity or stop clumping in cookies and cocoa powder are entirely harmless. EFSA permits its use at quantum satis without any safety concerns.
